The Ace Combat series has always been at the forefront of flight action games. The latest entry, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation adds a ferocious new multiplayer mode, and other features that push the gameplay further into the blue skies.

While the plot of the game hasn't been entirely divulged, players will find themselves more involved in wars than ever before. Flight action continues to be an important part of the game, with would-be pilots guiding their aircraft through danger-filled skies while keeping a close eye on their bullet and missile supply. However, Ace Combat 6 introduces two new gameplay aspects that set it apart from its predecessors: The Allied Support System and the Dynamic Operation System.

With the Allied Support System aerial vehicles can be called upon for support, such as helicopters, bombers and fighter planes. However, ground vehicles can also be summoned to lend a hand against ground targets, with naval fleets and tanks entering the fray.

The second feature, the Dynamic Operation System, enhances battles even further. This system creates a living battlefield that affects each mission, with up to six separate land, sea or air-based battles breaking out at once. It brings a level of realism to the game, engulfing the player in a more life-like flying experience. Ground structures seized during a battle, such as an airport or a radar station, can be used for refueling purposes and to provide accurate data for future operations. Destroying fundamental enemy buildings, like a power station, can shut down certain sections of its defense, leaving it wide open for a counter-attack. Furthermore, the player doesn't complete the level after just one part of the mission -- they must finish all sections in order to move forward.

Multiplayer plays a tremendous part in Ace Combat 6. Using the Xbox Live network, players can challenge a wealth of online competition. They can take part in a quick death match or try their hand at team death match, working with others to snatch up a few victories. Furthermore, players can try out the Dynamic Operation System with a friend in co-op mode. An online ranking leaderboard will be introduced to coincide with the game's release, letting gamers know where they stand in Namco Bandai's virtual flight class. Top pilots can even earn potential rankings, although they'll probably have to defend them.

Namco Bandai continues to do excellent things with the Xbox 360 hardware. The jets, based on realistic models of actual aircraft such as the F-15 E Strike Eagle and the F-22 Raptor (among others), appear well rendered from the early video sequences of the game. Even the smallest of things, like the smoke emitted from their engines, looks excellent. As for audio, constant chatter from co-pilots and colleagues, along with thundering explosions and weapon effects sound great.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation sounds like it has a lot going for it, particularly with its numerous options and online play. Look for more coverage in the future, including more details regarding the story and hands-on impressions.
