There's something about being able to provide a dual kind of aggression, both in terms of heavily-laden weapons fire and vicious driving skills. A few games have mixed together such a formula before, such as the Twisted Metal series and, most recently, Midway's Roadkill. Now it's Ubisoft's turn, and the company is looking to turn some heads with a justified smack to the face with a reinvention of that formula- enter 187 Ride Or Die.
Think Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas meets Mad Max's battle sequences and you'll get the idea. The game puts you in the shoes of a reluctant yet powerful young man by the name of Buck, a man who's living up the criminal life and enjoying plenty of bling as a result. However, he soon finds himself defending his own when an enemy by the name of Cortez, along with his gang of rough riders, decides to try and take over his territory. This is the set-up for the battle, with Buck's team, including his mentor Dupree, facing off against Cortez's for downright superiority. Last man standing, if you will.
Ubisoft France is putting some dedicated work into the game to make sure it perfectly captures the attitude of street essence, while still delivering the kind of mounting gameplay that all types of players can identify and keep up with. The graphics will feature all sorts of vehicular damage effects, such as slow motion and blur effects, to copy the look of such destruction. In addition, the sounds will be kicking with street attitude, courtesy of a hip hop soundtrack and the enlistment of such actors as Larenz Tate (playing Buck) and Noel Gugliemi (playing Cortez).
A game can only look and sound the part so much, and then it needs to have enough depth to keep your attention. Again, 187 Ride Or Die looks to fill the role. There will be many different types of cars to choose from, including muscle cars, classic vehicles, and other stylish rides to show the kind of strength your team is packing. Additionally, you can customize your vehicles with numerous weapons, such as shotguns, machine guns, or even more stylish ones to eliminate your enemies with a bit of humility.
As for game modes, 187 Ride Or Die will have plenty. Single players can experience such games as Death Race, where it's simply a battle for survival; Cop Chase, where you eliminate targets using some law enforcement assistance; and Assassination, where particular targets are pointed out during missions. Those who aren't too thrilled with solo play, however, will find themselves pleased with the fact that the game will have split-screen multiplayer offline, as well as online support for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 2
We're probably going to get a better look at what Ubisoft has in mind with 187 Ride Or Die next month when E3 takes place in Los Angeles. For now, though, it sounds like a very appealing idea, mixing a tough persona with gritty vehicular damage to back it up. So the next time the opposition tries a drive-by, you can actually chase after them and return the favor. Hey, eye for an eye, right? Look for more coverage on the game soon, playa.
