Games based on movies, for the most part, lack the visual quality of their predecessors. For instance, The Matrix, while a great movie trilogy, bombed as The Matrix Online, Enter the Matrix and The Matrix: Path of Neo. It appears now, however, that the movie duo who tried to merge the video game and movie worlds in The Matrix, Larry and Andy Wachowski, are at it again with the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, Speed Racer.
A new exclusive video launched on MovieFone yesterday that looks like the director duo's best effort to date.
Speed Racer, which first launched as a manga book series and later as an anime TV series in Japan and found new life when it arrived in the U.S., tells the simple tale of Speed Racer, whose best skill is racing in what seems to be a never ending competition, as he discovers the identity of the mysterious Racer X. While the movie for Speed Racer won't arrive until May 2008, a recently released trailer for the live action film features racing scenes that resemble some of the best looking segments ripped from racing games.
Stars for the movie include Emile Hirsh as Speed Racers, his parents John Goodman and Susan Sarandon, girlfriend Trixie and Speed Racer's arch-nemesis is played by TV's Lost star, Matthew Fox.
Sidhe Interactive, a New Zealand-based developer with racing game roots with the popular GripShift, is currently developing the game for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. Given Sidhe's skill at creating outlandish racing tracks, it appears that the developer itself may have helped inspire some of the trailer's faster scenes.
Go Speed Racer indeed.
