As was expected (following an announcement back in September), after evaluating the branding strategy as part of the annual general meeting, Eidos parent company SCi Entertainment has decided to officially change its company name to Eidos plc. The change is effective as of December 3, 2008 and the company will also change its stock symbol from SEG to EID.
In September, the company explained that Eidos is a better fit from a branding perspective since the product slate is largely associated with that brand. "We are focusing our efforts on our cornerstone franchises, which are predominantly associated with the Eidos brand. The Eidos name is widely recognised in the games marketplace and is our trading name," SCi's original statement reads. "The Board feels that it would be beneficial to align the name of the listed Company to the strong product brand that Eidos represents in order to benefit from a single identity and clearer outward and internal communication."
Eidos is once again the subject of takeover speculation this week, as new reports have surfaced suggesting that the publisher is in "early stage" talks with suitors such as EA and Ubisoft.
