Officials for popular video codec DivX today have confirmed that the technology will indeed be integrated into Sony's PlayStation 3. PS3 apparently joins over 100 million DivX Certified products that have been shipped into the market to date.
DivX support will be added to the PS3 in a future system update, which the company simply said is expected at "a forthcoming date." In addition to providing support for DivX video playback, game developers for PS3 will be able utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00 (released by SCE on November 2).
"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."
