PlayStation 3 Gets 2.00 Firmware Update on Nov. 8

Remote access from PSP to PS3 and new playlist options turn Sony's console into streaming media hub.

Sony announced that all PlayStation 3 owners would get the Version 2.00 firmware update tomorrow, November 8. On Wednesday morning, Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed that since firmware updates are for all global territories.

While the update won't cure the common cold, it will allow PSP-enabled players to remotely turn their PS2 on and off over a WiFi connection using the Remote Play1 function. Once on, users will be able to stream music, photos and videos from their console's hard drive to their PSP.

The company also announced that the update gives players the option to create personalized lists for music and photos so they can stream in their virtual dance party or merely torture friends with a high-definition slideshow of their latest global excursion.

PS3 owners have long sought to personalize the system's XMB (XrossMediaBar), and the new update grants players that wish by unlocking options to change the bar's brightness, color and make it easier to change backgrounds as they arrive on the PlayStation Network. In addition, a news option in the XMB gives gamers quick access to PlayStation news.
