GamePolitics is reporting that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a suspension for Nintendo's "Wii Remote" trademark application. The reason given in the public statement is that the word "remote" is far too common to be trademarked. Nintendo would have to disclaim any ownership of the word "remote" except in the case of "Wii Remote" for the trademark to be granted.
Nintendo submitted its original claim on "Wii Remote" in March 2008. The company has shown no signs of trying to trademark Wiimote, the unofficial term used for the Wii controller.
