Sony has been losing market share and it desperately needs to convert the majority of those 50 million PS2 owners into PS3 adopters. It won't be easy, and clearly the biggest obstacle at the moment is the PS3's price, but analysts believe Sony definitely still has a chance to catch or even exceed Microsoft in the console race.
GameDaily BIZ picked the brains of five leading game industry analysts to get their respective takes on how Sony can "rescue" the PS3 before the hole grows any deeper.
Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan Securities
Sony has two ways to increase sales: either they price competitively (that means at the same price as their competition), or they convince consumers that the higher price is justified by "must have" features.
"Should they price at parity with Xbox 360 ($299), I think that PS3 sales would exceed 360 sales, and eventually, they could catch up."
They don't seem inclined to price competitively, and the cost of production for the PS3 coupled with Sony's financial situation may preclude a price cut over the near term. I said I expected a price cut in April, but it's not clear (given the strong Yen) whether the company can afford to do so that early. It's entirely possible that they cut in June (E3), September (TGS), holiday, or not at all.
If I'm right that they cannot afford to price competitively, that leaves them the alternative of educating consumers about the value proposition of the PS3. That strategy has its pitfalls, insofar as the feature set of the PS3 includes many expensive components that each appeal to only a minority of consumers. For example, Wi-Fi is great to have if you care to log on to PSN, but in reality, only a fraction of PS3 owners really care. (I know that they claim 17 million PSN members--maybe it's 14 million--but the truth is that most had to log on to download a system update, and joined while waiting). If there are only 17 million Xbox Live members out of 28 million, it is likely that only 60% of consumers have the desire to be online, and some of these would be happy to use a wired Internet connection. Sony asks consumers to pay for Wi-Fi whether they desire it or not. Similarly, they ask consumers to pay for a hard drive, which has value only if the purchaser intends to download content. Flash memory would suffice for most game saves, as Nintendo has proven with the Wii.
Finally, the Blu-ray player feature is another "nice to have," but should only really appeal to HDTV households (maybe 30% of the market). I am certain that in 10 years, HDTV penetration will approach 100%, but at present, a large number of potential PS3 purchasers don't have HD, and don't perceive the need to pay for Blu-ray.
That makes the education option extremely difficult. I think that they should do both (cut price and aggressively market the PS3 feature set), but am not optimistic that we'll see real traction from the latter this year. Rather, the immediate boost will come when they decide to cut price. I expect it this year, as soon as their cost structure permits a cut. My Monday note said April, and that is nothing more than a guess. It could come later, but it seems to me that it must come some time in 2009.
With that said, I think that PS3 will sell well once competitively priced. The company has an insurmountable advantage in Japan, and an overall brand loyalty in Europe. Should they price at parity with Xbox 360 ($299), I think that PS3 sales would exceed 360 sales, and eventually, they could catch up. At present, it doesn't look like that is happening any time soon, so Sony should be prepared to remain in third place until well after they cut price.

Jasonisthesx - Where did I say that MS deserves to be number 1... no where. All I said was that Sony's rabid fans need to stop acting like the PS3 needs to be at the top. If you are happy with your ps3, that is good. I am happy with mine, but I also acknowledge its short comings. Killzone 2 will probably be a great game... the visuals look awesome, and yet so did Metal Gear 4 and it just finally reached 1 million in sales in the US in December... the game came out in June! It sold twice as much in one month as it did for the rest of the year... that is a problem. People are not buying games, exclusives are being lost. Konami argued that they needed to sell 1 million on day one! These games are expensive as hell to make and no ones buying... Little Big Planet cracked the top ten in October and hasn't even made the top 20 in sales since... Halo 3, a game that came out last year, is currently beating Resistance 2, a game that came out two months ago, in sales and is almost at the 10 million mark. In all of 2008, only one PS3 game cracked the top 20 for sales according to NPD... Count exclusives all you want... PS2 had a ton more, and they sold over a million copies on a regular basis... Why do you think Sony lost GTA and Final Fantasy... because those games will sell almost twice as much if not more on an xbox. Killzone isn't going to save PS3, because like every other beautiful exclusive Sony has, it just won't sell that much (talking Halo numbers). And that is why they will continue to lose exclusives, and that is why they will have difficulty claiming the #1 spot... not to mention xbox live penetration has reached 17 million users and that is a lot of people to play online with. Quote specs, exclusives, etc... but what is driving the world today is money money money...
PS3 is a great system. they dont need to improve anything. just maybe some better games other than that its a great system. Only reason xbox has better sales is because the ps3 cost more but buying an xbox 360 will still cost more because buying online gamecards abd all other things that the ps3 doesnt need. So buying a Ps3 would be worth it. And you dont need an HD tv 2 tell the difference ..its right there. And also sont needs to stop selling its top games over to Xbox.Thats making it worse. So i Know ps3 should be on top if it isnt, then it WIILL Be.
" The only way ps3 can catch up, is if it developed as many successful titles as the xbox 360. right now to me it's best feature is that it's the cheapest blu-ray player you can find. but then again you'll now be paying $40 for every movie you buy." You're right. You know I had someone like you ask that question, and guess what I did? I developed this HUUUGE list of exclusives for the ps3, and then I created one for the 360. And guess what? Sony had more, in fact, alot more. Soo... yeah. Besides, what does M$ have? Mass Effect, Halo, Gears... Thats all the good playable exclusives. Hmm.. God of war 3, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Infamous... You see my point?
Dearsums, If you want to use the first killzone 1 to insult Killzone 2, be my guest. Because that only tells me you have NOTHING. Sony does deserve to be number 1.The Xbox 360 was made in 2004. The ps3 was made in 2006. Therefore, the RSX is better, ram, etc. So please, dont say that Moneysoft deserves it. Because they dont deserve ****
The only way ps3 can catch up, is if it developed as many successful titles as the xbox 360. right now to me it's best feature is that it's the cheapest blu-ray player you can find. but then again you'll now be paying $40 for every movie you buy.
Zippydsmlee - I don't know what you are basing that on other than pure hope... Microsoft increased... INCREASED... its market share over the PS3 in 2008 by over 1 million world wide. In the US, MS increased their market share over the PS3 by 1.7 million (all figures from vgchartz.com). And this was Sony's biggest release year yet. Don't get me wrong, Killzone will have an effect, but will it be any more of a temporary bump then Metal Gear Solid was? Killzone 2 is a sequel to a poorly reviewed game. Hardly the fanfare (beyond fanboys that is) that Halo 2 had. And even if there is a price cut, what is keeping MS from simply cutting their price once more... They are in the black with their machine, unlike Sony... therefore they have the wiggle room. Please don't get me wrong... I have both, and I enjoy the PS3 for what it delivers... I am just getting tired of this belief amongst people that Sony deserves to be #1. If that is what they deserved, they would be there. MS has had a rough ride and they are still making profit. Sony is losing $50 on every machine sold. Not trying to start a war. I am just trying to help curb an epidemic of delusion that is running rampant in Sony HQ right now.
sadly the Wii is beating both :(
Do you have to ask? its less than 8 million units behind the 360, at this rate it will pass the 360 by 010.
