David Perry Awarded Honorary Doctorate by Queen's University
The "Spielberg of video games" (according to BBC) has been presented with an honorary doctorate by Queen's University for his achievements in the game industry.

Industry luminary and Shiny Entertainment founder David Perry, who's been working on a number projects, including Top Secret for Acclaim, GameConsultants.com, GameInvestors.com and GameIndustryMap.com, has been honored by Queen's University Belfast in Ireland. The prestigious academic institution has awarded Perry (who is originally from Northern Ireland) an honorary Doctorate in Science for "distinction in computer game development and design."
Dr. Maire O'Neill, a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at Queen's, presented Perry with his degree, and commented that his accomplishments demonstrate that local talent can compete and even lead on a worldwide stage. She stated, "Awarding David Perry with an honorary degree is a fitting recognition of his outstanding accomplishments as a programmer, developer, consultant, entrepreneur and visionary in the global video games industry."
A 2003 BBC news report went so far as to say: "If video games are the new Hollywood, David Perry is a bona fide Spielberg."
Ray O'Rourke, whose company leads the consortium managing the building program for the 2012 London Olympics, was also a recipient of an honorary doctorate.

Incidentally, this forum doesn't allow for paragraphs, apparently, so sorry for my long block of rant there.

He's probably one of the most overrated game developers in history. Dave Perry was the founder of Shiny, and he gets a lot of credit for some fairly good games (Earthworm Jim, Cool Spot, Aladdin, MDK) that he had a hand in. But to call him the "Spielberg of games" indicates that he consistently creates hits. He doesn't. In fact, some of his latest efforts, like Messiah, Sacrifice, and Enter the Matrix, have been downright duds. And what's more, he's not even with Shiny anymore. Incidentally, three of Dave Perry's best guys from Shiny went on to form Planet Moon, which put out one incredible game (Giants: Citizen Kabuto), one cult classic (Armed & Dangerous) and one goofy PSP game (Infected), as well as some others. And the also-brilliant game MDK 2 was developed by a completely different team over at Bioware. There are some really talented game developers out there who can crank out consistently amazing games. Sid Meier, Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto, Tomonobu Itagaki, Fumito Ueda, and Tetsuya Mizaguchi are all much more deserving of recognition than Dave Perry. Even lesser-known developers like Eric Chahi (Another World, Heart of Darkness) are a step above, as far as I'm concerned.
