MTV Networks announced today that they have sold "more than 2.5 million game levels based on songs" for Rock Band. This "double platinum" status was achieved in only eight weeks since the game's release on PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 20, 2007. The Metallica three-pack of songs is the game's top-selling music download, with Foreigner's Juke Box Hero, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fortunate Son, Weezer's Buddy Holly and The Knack's My Sharona topping the singles.
"Our goal with Rock Band was to create an entirely new way for people to interact with the music they love," stated Van Toffler, president, MTVN Music Group/Logo/Films. "The incredible response to the downloadable content we've released to date motivates us even more to establish this platform as a way for people to discover new, up and coming artists through the game - in addition to delivering great game play experiences set to the music of mega- artists."
As a promotional method for up-and-coming 30 Seconds To Mars, All-American Rejects and The Sounds, several of their songs will be available at a discounted price of $0.99 per song for the month of January. More song packs, albums and individual tracks, retailing from $.99 to $2.99 per track, are promised to be coming throughout 2008.
