While Harmonix and MTV Games initially secured a few downloadable Metallica tracks for Rock Band, Activision has apparently gone a step further in this game of one-upmanship by actually securing the popular metal band for an entire game (similar to the publisher's upcoming Guitar Hero: Aerosmith).

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Edward Woo found confirmation of the news in one of Activision's SEC filings. "In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms," Activision stated.

Considering that Activision's fiscal year ends on March 31 and Guitar Hero IV (now called Guitar Hero: World Tour) is planned for this holiday, it would seem like Guitar Hero: Metallica is being primed for release shortly thereafter, likely in Q1 of calendar 2009.

Activision has yet to make a formal announcement about Guitar Hero: Metallica. It'll be interesting to see which songs they select for the multiplatinum-selling band's game. Following the release of the "Black" album, the band's music took a decidedly different tone, which didn't sit well with a number of fans. Furthermore, in light of Guitar Hero: World Tour's additional instruments, will the Metallica game feature support for drums and vocals too? We've pinged Activision to find out, but have yet to hear back.
