Rolling Stone is reporting that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was the most successful first week release ever for the 38-year old band. The game sold 567,000 copies in its first week, grossing roughly $25 million. By contrast to that, Aerosmith's last studio album, Honkin' on Bobo released in 2004, sold 160,500 copies in its first week for a return of about $2 million.
"We didn't have to think about it very much," says Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford. "We were all pretty aware of how popular the game was, and being the first band to have our own version of it seemed pretty exciting. We're the first band of many."
This year's releases Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will feature more high profile artists than ever before in response to the huge popularity of these respective series. The former game will feature songs from and the likeness of Jimi Hendrix and the later will have the Guns n' Roses song Shackler's Revenge along with AC/DC's Let There Be Rock. Metallica seems like the next likely band to receive a specific release in the Guitar Hero series.
Guitar Hero World Tour is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest classic and modern rock bands of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime and many more. Additionally, the game will offer significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles. Budding rock stars will also be given creative license to fully customize everything from their characters' appearance and instruments to their band's logo and album covers.

"There's a massive list of artists and songs that are available," says Tim Riley, head of music for Activision. "There's a smaller list of the ones you really want, and there's a supershort list of the ones you have to have. So it's safe to say we're all kind of going after similar things."
"This fusion of gaming and music is really expanding the music industry," says Eran Egozy, co-founder of Harmonix. "It's a revolution for the business."
Allen Kovac, CEO of Motley Crue's management firm Tenth Street Entertainment who helped debut content from the band exclusively on Rock Band DLC, thinks that music games allows them to reach a whole new audience. "Pretty soon," says Kovac, "this is going to be the way you sell music."
