Top 10 Most Misleading Video Game Names

The Orange Box

To the uninitiated, a game called the "Orange Box" sounds like something bought from a fruit stand, not a collection of some of the best shooting games available. Although the title describes the color of the actual box the game comes in, it does little to reveal what any of the games are all about.

every one of these lists are just randomly picked games, etc.

so...aol probably walked into their writers office and asked who is good at talking about stuff they know nothing about! Instead of making articles like "hot gamer chicks" or "bad games names/titles/obsessions" why dont you get people to write theses lists that ACTUALLY KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THE GAMES MAYBE?

I don't understand why all of you people are becoming all stuck up and pissed off at this article!!! Its suppose to be a little funny!!!! Get a f#$@ing sense of humor people and GET OUTSIDE!!!!!! Calm down, this article is half humor, and half informative, so calm down!!! i don't even understand most of these titles anyway, but until i read this passage, i understood almost every single title and what it meant!! For example, Viva Pinata is the joke title, they explained it in a way to make you laugh(i don't care if you didn't!) Tabula Rasa is an informative one, that tells you what the title means, with a tiny bit of a joke in it! So people, just calm down, get outside, and lay off them!!!!

"The only one I agree with is Orange Box. Other than that, this is fail." This whole article is fail, The Orange Box was probably named because of Valve's obsession with orange, mainly in Half-Life. Nobody really knows why it's named The Orange Box though.

If they extended the article to include gaming articles, then they could have added their "Most Influential War Games" article from a couple of weeks back which should really have been titled "Shooting games we thought were cool from the last couple of years and a couple of obscure antiques to make it seem like we actually did research" however, a lot of their complaints are still pretty much of a stretch... The Orange Box is not a gaming title, it's a packaging/marketing deal. Given the fact that most of the advertisement on TV for said box involved Portal (which is very well titled) ending with the phrase "part of The Orange Box" or a list of the four games in the Orange Box, giving the package a simple name that stands out and makes people ask questions certainly makes for better attention. Likewise, Dues Ex (and the most common translation is "God IN the Machine") seems perfectly well titled. Especially since the phrase "Dues Ex Machina" has been used in paper and pencil, table-top role playing games as far back as twenty years ago to describe powers where a player can take over machinery. Likewise, "Dues Ex Machina" has been used in the occasional sci-fi movie for the same. In fact, I'd say modern gamers are more likely to connect to the vaunted sci-fi anime "Ghost in the Shell" from that title than they are the historical source, given that most gamers know little to nothing about Greek plays, I sincerely doubt that that's the first thought that enters their mind. STALKER, is another leap. My first thought on "stalker" is a "hunter". Predators "stalk". The only thing that surprises me is that, from the description here, the term "STALKER" refers to the players rather than the bad guys. Meanwhile "Shadow of Cherynobyl" certainly makes me think of the huge meltdown that occured there and "Shadow" is often used to discuss lingering side effects of a major event, and mutated monsters certainly is the first thing that springs to mind for Chernobyl (well, that or a conspiracy theorist plot). In any case, this is still better than the "I like Gears of War so let's call it one of the 10 most influential war games despite the fact that it only came out recently and hasn't really influenced anything yet" article from a couple of weeks back, but that's not saying much.

To polar1706, they're talking about the titles of the games and how misleading they are. (did you even read the title?) ...and this is not one gamedaily's better articles. :/

They really need to stop making these. They have no idea what the hell they are talking about.
