Quick Time Events
Although the arcade game Dragon's Lair is made up of Quick Time Events (or QTEs), Sega officially coined the term with its Dreamcast adventure, Shenmue. Little did the company know that the rest of the video game industry was going to copy and abuse its idea. A QTE forces you to make a split second decision to save a video game character and/or trigger an action. One of the more famous ones from Shenmue forces you to quickly press a button to avoid getting hit with a soccer ball. In this case, failing doesn't ruin the story, but you can die in other games, such as the upcoming Bourne Conspiracy. On one hand, QTEs keep us on edge and adrenaline levels high. On the other, developers have overused this feature to the point that we groan whenever a button pops up on screen. Unless there's a way to innovate, the QTE needs to go.

I gotta say, I now have serious beliefs that the people writing these game-related articles aren't in fact gamers themselves. You guys don't sound like gamers at all. Plus, what's this junk about tutorials? Do you WANT to be thrown into a game without knowing ANYTHING AT ALL? I mean, sure, it's fun to learn and discover, yes, but theres a limit to that. It's fun to learn combos in fighting games. It's fun to discover the strengths and weaknesses of certain weapons in games. It is NOT fun not knowing controls and not knowing jack **** about a game when going into it. Please, Gamedaily, either start talking sense, get some REAL gamers on your staff, or go die in a fire. Oh, and seriously, comparing the Wii Fit to a Big Mac? That article was just such utter **** it made me want to punch a small child.
i agree with the rockband / instrument thing- christ! i need my own band room now! Got an appartment- thought it was big enough- now I practically have no living room cuz its filled with the parafanalia that goes with the f***ing game! god forbid that the ps2 ddr mat works with the wii! or the guitars and drums and mics be interchangable!
Well, for once you guys have a couple things right. A few of those ARE indeed overused; however, most of them are overused for a reason. For example, exploding barrels: action games like to include different ways to kill people, and setting off an explosion is probably the simplest way to include environmental kills. When used in conjunction with other features, this can lead to very deep gameplay, such as found in Half-Life 2. And I really hope you guys aren't going to try and tell me Half-Life 2 was poorly designed. Alright, what else... instruments? Yeah, there's a lot of them coming out, but the Guitar Hero guitars work with most guitar games, so there's no real reason to buy more than one axe. Microphones should be a non-issue for anyone with a headset or who already has Rock Band -- or hell, just anyone with a basic USB microphone. You might have a small point with the drumsets, but I'm honestly perfectly willing to buy the Guitar Hero IV drumset in addition to my Rock Band ones if it opens up new gameplay. Finally, I will concede that I found it hard to tell the difference between Dark Sector and Gears of War. I'm not gonna lie. I'm kind of enjoying the incredibly low level of quality found on this site.
yeah *****es!
I tottaly disagree with everything in this little shana***an. you ****tards at AOL can suck my HUGE ****!
Things like Save-points now and days are done to make the game harder (resident evil)..unlockable characters to fit the games perspective cuz people play games to conquer them..not to buy em conquered. Graphics are continually being pushed through repetition, sense you guys are SOOOO knowledgeable and can see graphics looking the same right?? You guys complain way too much about everything...in this case...you came very close to having something to talk about for once. Publishers often crank out played out methods cuz it sells and ONLY because of that...Activisions "Guitarhero" is evident of it. part 3 did nothin to the series at all..it was just to sell freaken 5 million copies
I actually think this is a great article. Buying multiple systems sucks. Also, a lot of these chicle's are overused in games. Whoever wrote number 7 should be given a medal, goman. There is too much crap on the market now.
Whoever wrote #7 deserves to be shot and killed.
What is your guys' problem? If people don't complain about things they don't like in games, those things will never get better. You make it sound like you want to live in a dictatorship where all video games and video game developers are worshipped, and no one ever says a bad word. I think these people are doing good by geting their opinions out there.
its just really sad that these guys have jobs in the first place, I've been playing games since I was like 4, so that gives me 15+ years of experience. First off, none of the comments they make even come from a developers point of view like most game magazines at least touch on, so all this sounds like is a daily article that simply complains and complains. It really sounds like my grandparents complaining about video games and all the problems with them. Please... if your going to continue making these articles, please use your brains, or hire better writers and editors.
