25. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (LucasArts/Nintendo 64)
One of the main reasons we picked up this Nintendo 64 game was for its excellent first level. You fly through Hoth in your snowspeeder, shooting troublesome droids while tripping large AT-AT's with a harpoon gun. Just like in The Empire Strikes Back movie, you circle around them, strap tow cables to their legs and bring those suckers down.

This article comes in at number 25 on the Most Credible Computer Gaming Articles Evarr list. No DOOM, wth its hidden chainsaw? No System Shock II with its ghosts and shambling mutants? No Thief (who will ever forget Bafford's Manor?)? No No One Lives Forever, duck-hunting Moroccan assassins from a window across the street? Pfft.
The end of Dracula X is actually the beginning of SOTN. It's a neat introduction. And, yeah, we considered Doom, and Shadow, but...the others overpowered them. That happens sometimes.
Yay Castlevania Symphony of the ***ht...but wait that's Dracula X...
Where's Starfox 64's first level? *tisk* *tisk*
Not a bad list, but they missed a few like Doom 1's first level, or Super Mario World. where the hell are those?
Super Metroid at #1... bold choice!
not a bad list at all. I was definitely happy to see bioshock in there (the opening scene as you're going underwater and you get your first view of rapture is a moment i'll never forget) However i'm surprised that Shadow of the Colossus wasn't included. If there ever was a game that the first level (in this case giant giant boss) made my jaw drop it was definitely that one
Metal gear and half life for the win.
metal gear owns
Seriously? half of these games dont even have "levels"
