Could a new Nintendo DS be in the works? Hong Kong-based video game import retailer Lik-Sang.com claims to have received word from "a Japanese contact stating Nintendo will have a formal announcement of the re-design on Jan 16th."

A redesigned Nintendo DS certainly wouldn't come as a shock to most, as Nintendo does have a history of tinkering with its handhelds (GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro, etc.) and Reggie Fils-Aime, head of marketing for Nintendo of America, did actually indicate late last year that Nintendo has been looking into possible redesigns for its dual-screen handheld.

Furthermore, the typically reliable and trustworthy Famitsu magazine in Japan recently teased its readers, saying that they heard a certain Nintendo console would soon be getting a redesign; the publication didn't state which Nintendo platform, though. We'd be surprised if the platform turned out to be the GameCube since it's in its waning days and the Revolution will be backwards compatible anyway.

If Lik-Sang's source is right, we'll all be talking about the new Nintendo DS this coming Monday. Stay tuned!
