Following last week's encouraging (to Sony, that is) report from analysts at the Yankee Group that predicted Sony to win the next-gen console battle by 2011, Sony today announced (via Reuters) that it would have 27 different PlayStation 3 games on hand at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (TGS).
While Sony has yet to pin down an exact number of titles it will make available for the PS3 on day one, it's certainly a good sign that the company will have more than double the number of titles at TGS than it had at this year's E3Expo (just 13 playable).
"It doesn't necessarily mean everything is running according to plan, but it's good to hear some positive development concerning the PlayStation 3," noted KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide.
Many of these games will naturally be the same ones that were shown at E3, including the impressive Heavenly Sword (Ninja Theory) and Warhawk (Incognito), which was used as a showcase game for Sony's new motion sensing PS3 controller. The lineup was further enhanced with such notables as Devil May Cry 4 from Capcom and Ridge Racer 7 from Namco Bandai.
Of course, as executives from both Microsoft and Sony have pointed out, because most third-party offerings will be available for both the Xbox 360 and PS3, it's really the first-party titles that will set the consoles apart in the next-gen race. Sony's PS3 games at TGS should include Resistance Fall of Man, Gran Turismo, Formula One World Championship, Lair, and MotorStorm, among others.
The Tokyo Game Show will run from September 22 - 24.
