The official PlayStation blog was revealed only a few days ago, and now the folks at Sony Computer Entertainment America are already using the site to dispel rumors and speculation – and there's been a lot of that concerning the PlayStation Portable lately.
A number of analysts have repeatedly said (some with more certainty than others) that a remodeled PSP is in the works at Sony. Most recently, popular gaming blog Kotaku added fuel to the fire with new details on the so-called "PSP Slim." New features mentioned included a slot loading UMD drive, improved battery life, an internal 4GB hard drive, Bluetooth capability and more.
According to the rumor, all of this is supposed to sell for the same MSRP as the current PSP when it goes on sale later this year. Another rumor that's been floating around for many, many months at this point is the idea that Sony would offer some sort of PSP Phone. If you ask Sony, however, neither a new PSP nor a PSP Phone is being planned.
"The rumor mill is flowing about new PSP hardware and a PSP phone, and I just wanted to take the time to clear the air," said John Koller, SCEA's Sr. Marketing Manager for PSP, on PlayStation.blog. "We haven't announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities."
He added, "As SCEA's resident PSP guru, I'm thrilled to hear that there's so much interest in the platform, but sorry folks, these reports floating around fall into the rumors/speculation category."
Of course, this doesn't mean that Sony's not working on something; it simply means they're not prepared to announce anything at this point. Hardware typically goes through a few revisions. Nintendo has done it multiple times with its GBA and DS, Sony did it with the PS2, and there's a good chance both the PS3 and PSP will get similar treatment eventually.
