This year's new E3 was a drastic change from years past, and the event garnered some pretty mixed reactions, with some executives deciding not to attend at all.
That said, next year's E3 may be in for an overhaul yet again. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has already acknowledged that this year's show was somewhat experimental and that they're looking at feedback to improve the show going forward. Furthermore, two unrelated sources at E3 2007 told GameDaily BIZ that 2007 was actually the final contracted year that the ESA has with LA County.
Now MCV appears to be hearing the same thing, but they're stating it as more a matter of fact. Without providing any source, MCV states that the ESA chose Santa Monica simply for contractual reasons and that E3 will definitely not take place in the LA area next year.
The publication also tapped a couple executives who seem to back up this notion.
"Maybe we have to leave LA to solve the problem," suggested Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for Xbox. "I'm not flying the flag for Las Vegas necessarily, but LA's not a convention town."
Alain Corre, Ubisoft's executive director for Europe, the Middle East, was quite critical of the new E3 as well. "E3 was less energizing, less dynamic and more diluted. There have been less opportunities for business or exposure to partners and media," he said. "The new formula was a good try, but it has to be re-thought thoroughly."
MCV's report notes that both Las Vegas and New York have been "mooted," and that the date and trade invite policy are currently under review.
GameDaily BIZ contacted the ESA for comment, and thus far we've only been told that they can't comment on "blind quotes."
