Although hardly surprising, analyst reports from PJ McNealy of American Technology Research and Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets indicate that both the PS3 and Wii have sold out at retail immediately following their respective launches.
Said McNealy, "Our research indicates that sell-outs for both the PS3 and Wii were apparently unanimous. While the PS3 sell-outs were expected given the limited quantities, the Wii sell-outs were likely but less certain in our opinion. We believe that the Wii sells itself to consumers, and that more hands-on time in places such as mall kiosks will only help create further buzz and success for the Wii. The publishers with the largest tie to the Wii at launch were, in our opinion, in order, Ubisoft, Activision and THQ. Nintendo's own first-party title Zelda was likely the best seller, with an extremely high attach rate."
Sebastian noted that as expected Resistance: Fall of Man appears to the top selling PS3 title so far. While both analysts said that new Wii shipments could be on the way as early as this week, neither had much knowledge on when more PS3 units would arrive. In fact, according to McNealy, retailers told him that they "had no idea."
McNealy also discovered that the Wii seems to be doing well in the controller attach rate, as extra Wii-motes have been snatched up by consumers. "Most of our retail checks indicated that any extra Wiimotes (the Wii comes with one Wiimote and the Nunchuka attachment) were sold out, and found a similar experience with nearly all major online retailers last night," he said.
With both the Wii and PS3 being in such high demand, it's possible that many consumers won't be able to secure one this holiday. That said, Microsoft could get a boost from a combination of PS3/Wii shortages and the success of Gears of War, which Sebastian said has had "strong sell-through." And retailers might even help 360's cause. Sebastian explained, "We also think that retailers are likely to encourage consumers unable to find PS3 or Wii consoles to consider purchasing an Xbox 360."
