Massachusetts state police today arrested William J. Robertson on charges of attempted murder and robbery, according to an Associated Press report. The 20-year-old Woodstock man and a partner—17-year-old Andrew Patnaude, for whom an arrest warrant has been prepared—allegedly attempted to rob customers who were waiting in line outside of a Wal-Mart in Putnam during the early hours of November 17 to get their hands on the newly launched PlayStation 3.
The gunmen demanded that everyone in line throw their possessions and cash on the ground or put them into two bags they were holding. When Michael Penkala, 21, saw the gunmen with bandanas over their faces he immediately dialed 911 on his cell phone. As the thieves approached Penkala, he refused to give up his wallet, which apparently held $2,500 in cash. The robbers then shot and wounded him. Penkala is still recovering from his injuries.
Currently Robertson is being held on $1 million bond pending arraignment in Danielson Superior Court. His partner in crime, however, remains on the run. Patnaude's last known address was Putnam, police said. Nevertheless, a search by state police, Putnam police and police dogs on Tuesday did not yield any leads on his whereabouts.
This wasn't the only PS3 launch related incident either. There have also been reports of various muggings, a drive-by shooting with a BB gun, a person being shoved into a pole, and even a staged robbery of PS3s by GameStop employees. The Wii launch lines were far more peaceful by comparison, most likely because the majority of those consumers were buying the new Nintendo console to play it, rather than buying the Sony console to make a profit on eBay.
[UPDATE] The police have now found and arrested the aforementioned Andrew Patnaude. He was arrested around 10:30 a.m., and like his partner Robertson is also being held on $1 million bond. Both are scheduled to appear in court on December 15.
