Tech-savvy Wii users have long been hacking their consoles to take advantage of homebrew software and external hard drives, but the gamers over at Mike and Heather have recently written up an easy-to-follow guide to doing so.

Why backup games to an external USB hard drive? For one, it eliminates the need to pop discs in and out of the Wii -- you'll be able to play it directly from the drive. Secondly, it'll speed up the loading time of games since the Wii won't have to spin up the disc to access content. Third, you won't have to worry about scratched discs.

The also lists all the software and which external hard drives you'll need to get this project rolling -- any intrepid readers want to give it a shot? Let us know how it works out for you in the comments!
