(2) Name your top two games of the fall season (released or pending release) and two over-hyped games. Justify.
LittleBigPlanet does an amazing job of combining user-created content and gameplay into a great package. Oh yeah, and it's a ton of fun, too. And as a sporadic WOW junkie, I'm super-excited for The Wrath of the Lich King -- who really needs to sleep, anyway?
Spore has gotten so much hype over the last three years that it was pretty much inevitable that there would be some level of disappointment. And while I love the overall look of Mirror's Edge, I hate the first-person perspective, and I think that a lot of other gamers are going to feel the same way.
Definitely Fallout 3 – I've never played a game that combined a sense of isolation, desperation, and hope like Fallout 3 seems to do. Plus, I can roam the Wasteland killing Super Mutants and Raiders all the live long day. And also most definitely Left 4 Dead. Just an incredible blast to scrabble with or as one of the zombies with a group of friends. I was never a Counter-Strike person, but L4D has opened my eyes. Maybe it's the zombie thing.
As far as over-hyped games? I'm not sure which games necessarily qualify as over-hyped this year. Fable 2? Gears 2? LittleBigPlanet? I'm game to say that they all live up to the hype in their own ways, so it's not really a question of them being "over-hyped" – more just "hyped." So, not sure I have an answer for that second half of the question, sadly.
Oooh tough, well I was stoked to play both Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour. I'm presently making my decision on which I like better. I'm super excited about Fallout 3, I think its going to be awesome! As for overhyped, I'd say Spore :( I was way more excited about it before I started playing...
It's almost impossible not to be googly-eyed about Left 4 Dead, and if I wasn't before, Valve's media blitz pretty much ensured I couldn't commute or read on the...um, couch without getting amped up about it. And so far, Fallout 3 is totally delivering on the years of anticipation—it's actually emotionally engaging, and the graphics are outstanding. Crysis Warhead and Peggle Nights? Not so much. Warhead is hardly terrible, but it wasn't the leap forward I was hoping for in such a forward-thinking franchise. Come to think of it, I guess I could say the same about PN.
To be honest, I can't think of much that isn't overhyped. I find the current release schedule very intimidating right now, and end up retreating to lightweight, familiar standbys -- I can't wait to play Order of Ecclesia after hearing it's just like the other 2D DS Castlevanias, and I'm getting more quick sessions of PixelJunk Eden in. I hear mixed things about Fallout 3, but still expect to find the environment captivating -- just like I did with Silent Hill: Homecoming.
Fallout 3, Gears of War 2
AND
Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 -- The hype is justified in both cases, and I'm excited about both of these big games.
I am always, always behind on games, so summer blends into fall for me. Two I'm thrilled with: Tales of Vesperia and Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness. I'm all about familiar and comfortable when game time is limited.
Overhyped? LittleBigPlanet and Spore. I'm simply tired of hearing about them, and I really don't think Spore delivered on many of its promises - and we've been hearing about it for so long, I'm not sure it had a chance to not be overhyped.
The games I am looking forward to playing are Fable 2 and Gears 2. It's funny that while I suck at Gears, I tend to have the most fun with that game in online multiplayer.
Two most over-hyped games..eh I'm not sure yet. Sorry to duck out on that one, but I'm pretty excited about a ton of games this holiday season and my empty checking account can verify that.
I'm looking forward to Wrath of the Lich King. Sure, it's another "WoW" expansion, but I'm interested in playing the new Death Knight class and seeing what Blizzard will do to maintain the top position. My other top game -- it's a toss-up. I'm really enjoying Fable 2 right now, but as a huge fan of Oblivion, I'm also excited about Fallout 3, which I'll be delving deeper into after I finish Fable 2.
For over-hyped titles, I'm going to have to go with LittleBigPlanet and Spore. Not that they're not amazing games (they might also be on my "best of" list) but by the time they were actually in stores, I felt I had heard so much about them already.
Little Big Planet! I haven't been this impatiently excited about a video game in a long time. It's just a game that makes me feel giddy with happiness, and I think it's an incredibly powerful creative tool. I'm looking forward to Prince of Persia too.
Over-hyped? Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. I really wanted it to be God of War meets Darth Vader evilness. It wasn't a bad game, but I got bored easily. And Wii Music... Miyamoto fanfare followed by utter confusion. I felt confused and pathetically non-musical. I don't play games to be reminded of my limitations. I'll stick to Guitar Hero.

All I have to say is that its KICK ASS that girls are getting more of a voice in gaming! I know you guys have been out their and finally you are getting more and more credit. You encourage other girls to come out and start some more hard core gaming! I am an old school gamer myself (N64 and back), but i am getting more into the newer stuff. Keep your voices heard girls!! I work for a website called GameZombie and we would love your input... http://www.gamezombie.tv/ ... keep it up girls!!
That's interesting, nmsillak, because I'm a female gamer who plays male characters far more than female ones. In MMOs and RPGs I typically create male characters before even considering a female one. (Heck, even my screen name is named after one of my male characters) Though Lara Croft is my favorite female action-adventure character, I adore Prince of Persia (well, before his recent re-design) and Altair much more. As far as MMOs and RPGs go... My male and female friends, as well as my mom and brother, tend to create characters of both genders. I think my mom is the only one who does not regularly play as a character of the opposite gender. The rest of us are almost always playing characters of the opposite sex. I don't think it's weird or creepy at all.
Well I think there are a LOT more of us than one thinks. I personally just smirk to myself when I am sitting within a group of guys who are talking about their games etc. And how girls don't play (ie. WoW) and I sit there and think to myself, ya... and it was probably ME that just whooped your butt last ***ht in the Badlands. Girls just don't have the need to brag as much, we get more satisfaction out of knowing we are WAY stronger and menacing than one might think. Well that is my philosophy and reasoning anyway. haha Maybe someone could answer this one though. WHY oh WHY do so many men feel the urge and need to make female Characters? It is kind of creepy!! I don't make male ones, and don't know any girls who do!

Good to see that normal looking women (and not stick figures) are into gaming. We need more of them.
