by Robin Yang on Friday, August 22, 2008

Welcome to week two of the HUD!
Did you miss the first one? This week, our panelists talk about gaming during the Olympics (talk about real-life versus the virtual), predict big gaming news at the this month's conventions and discuss music licensing fees. And as always, they reveal which games have kept them busy over the past week. Watch out readers, there's some competition developing here. Hope you enjoy this week's HUD, and be sure to send us questions for next week! - Robin

(1) What are you playing this week?

Stephen Totilo
MTV Multiplayer

I've played a dash of Too Human, a sprinkling of upcoming DS tower-defense game Ninjatown, and a hearty helping of Lumines PC to test the gaming capabilities of my new laptop (why try Crysis?). And since we last talked, I finished Braid, catching Chris Grant here on the leaderboard. I have 60 pieces. He does too. But... so many people do. Meaning we're all in the lead together? I thought games were about dominance and mastery, not equality and shared accomplishment.

Chris Taylor
Console Monster

I've had a Capcom week. Been playing the heck out of Bionic Commando Rearmed and... less of 1942: Joint Strike. Going even more retro this week, I decided to dig out my NES and play a bit more Castlevania. But back to Bionic Commando. I'm in love with it all over again. The soundtrack is even more amazing than the original and once you get the swinging down, it's brilliant fun.

Nick Puleo
Co-Optimus

I'm still dabbling in Geometry Wars 2, but I'm limiting myself to a certain number of attempts at the high score a day. If I don't I'll be playing till my fingers fall off or my voice gives out from yelling curse words. Civilization Revolution has been conquering most of my spare time. I had a personal vendetta against that midget Napoleon who refused to bow to my superior dominance. I spent a good part of my weekend battling him and then got sucked into some co-op multiplayer. I also cashed in my Fable 2 pre-order and snagged pub games. Fortune's Tower is very addictive, but the other games have yet to grab me. And no, I haven't cheated...yet. [Read more]

Another back and forth with me between Bionic Commando Rearmed and Soul Calibur IV. I absolutely love old-school games, so playing Bionic Commando Rearmed brings back a lot of great memories of a more simple time in gaming. Where a man could totally kick ass with nothing but a gun and a bionic arm. I submit that jumping is for losers. Swinging is the new 'JUMP' this year. As for SCIV, what can I say that hasn't been said by numerous reviews? Great game if you're a fan of fighting games.

Xav de Matos

Big Download

Just got back from X08 in Toronto where I got some quality time in with Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Far Cry 2 among other games at the show. Also has a chance to play some co-op single player Call of Duty: World at War with Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games [Ed.'s note: *cough*name-dropping*cough*], it was a pretty random post-interview encounter. At home, I've been playing through Too Human which, despite some flaws, is a lot of fun and recommended for loot hounds.

Chris Grant
Joystiq

Still working on Bionic Commando Rearmed (which is punishingly difficult!). I've taken up Too Human and, despite trying to enjoy it, I'm having a difficult time adjusting to the combat system (and by adjusting to, I mean enjoying).

Libe Goad
GameDaily

This week? Playing super early code for Dead Space and Rock Band 2. I've sworn on my own mother that I won't say anything else about these games for now...

N'Gai Croal
Newsweek

Now that I'm back in NYC and reunited with my beloved gaming systems, I resumed playing Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and PixelJunk Eden; I started Siren, and I began and completed Braid. Everyone with an Xbox 360 should at least try the Braid demo.

Nick Chester
Destructoid

This week I've played a surprisingly small amount of Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2, which should be noted as some sort of miracle. I haven't checked the leaderboards, but I'm pretty confident N'Gai still hasn't caught up to my scores in any mode. Speaking of which, I also had a chance to check out Rock Band 2 at MTV, where we rocked it hard with N'Gai on tracks like "Spoonman" and "You Oughta Know." I will be playing a lot of Rock Band 2 this coming week ... for work purposes only, of course.

Kevin Cassidy
GoNintendo

This week, I've been absolutely addicted to Bionic Commando: Rearmed, and Bangai-O Spirits. What can I say, I have a special place in my heart for 2d gaming! I'm right at the end of Bionic Commando, in both single and co-op play. The only thing that's keeping me from beating it is the multiplayer 'Don't Touch The Floor' matches I've been having with friends. As for Bangai-O Spirits, I'm stuck...and I'm only 11 levels in.

This feature is great! It's refreshing to see a handful of views from people within the industry. Also, I just wanted to tell Libe that I'm loving 'The Wire' as well. It's definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Keep up the great work guys & gals!
