Week 9: TGS, what TGS?
We have not one, not two, but THREE guests this week. It has *nothing* to do with the fact that two of our regulars [ahem ahem] are off frolicking around the Tokyo Game Show... This week, Ross Miller of Joystiq, Jason Callina of Giant Japanese Robot, and John Davison of What They Play join us for a discussion of console-exclusive downloadable content, the 'recession-proof'-ness of the video game industry and sex in games. - Robin, Agent #104117100
My glorious farting machine in Little Big Planet is finally complete.
Eight flavors of farts activated by big red buttons. A similarly enabled burping machine also joins it, and it's now immortalized online forever and ever under the gloriously literal name of "Burps and Farts". I apparently have the creative aptitude of a five year old. I've also been playing through Dead Space, which aside from having very silly looking monsters is one of the best scary games I've played in a long while.
Before this year's Great Explosion of AAA Releases, I'm going back through some of the library and playing through Half-Life 2 and BioShock. It'll be interesting to see how their narrative style and presentation differ from next week's Dead Space. There's also a handful of LittleBigPlanet levels I've been told to check out. Beyond that, I'm a few performances away from Endless Setlist in Rock Band 2, which time permitting I might try to take a stab at on Sunday.
I've been trying to focus a bit on retro or retro inspired games so I've been playing Gravitron 2 which is a fantastic Lunar Lander/Defender/Asteroids mashup. There will also be some quality Mega Man 9 time this weekend. In preparation for Resident Evil V I've gone back to Resident Evil IV on the Wii. There is great satisfaction to be found in pointing the Wii-mote at the heads of the infected and reloading with waggle. Too bad I won't get the same experience on the PS3.
Fable II on Xbox 360 -- can't say much more since it's verboten by Microsoft.
I've been playing a lot of Peggle... on my cell phone. Don't make me explain why... I'm ashamed to admit it in the first place! With things being so busy, and my cell phone always on me, it's the best way to get my gaming fix. Just wait until Peggle hits DS... or iPhone... [Ed.'s Note: Don't apologize. Peggle is freakin' AWESOME.]
Dead Space (PS3). Lock's Quest (DS). LEGO Batman (PS3). HUD: The Game (Wii) [Ed.'s Note: I give that game 10/10 cats in a sink.]
I've played through almost the entirety of Duke Nuke 3D again on XBLA. Also a bit of the Little Big Planet Beta and working on my virtual stroke in Tiger Woods 09.
LittleBigPlanet on PS3 and Quantum of Solace on DS.
This week I have been mainly playing the "get work done on time" game. It's so addictive I'm up until the late hours trying to finish it. Other than that I've been playing a LOT of Mega Man 9. I also bought Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Xbox Live Arcade as well as a bunch of DLC (Duran Duran!!) for Rock Band. I'm getting rather impatient having to wait for Duran Duran to actually be on the disc in Rock Band 2. As well as that I've been giving myself Carpal tunnel by reviewing Dancing Stage Universe 2...using a controller because I have no mat. My hand really, really hurts!
Thanks to the PlayStation Holiday Preview event in Toronto, I had the opportunity to go hands-on with the new Prince of Persia, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge and many more upcoming games. At home I just wrapped up Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway.
WAAAAGH!! I've completely immersed myself in Warhammer Online this week. The game does a great job of allowing you to enter a PVP scenario anywhere in the game, instead of having to go to a specific location like WoW. Another cool thing is the game highlights a certain area on the map, and when you mouse over the area, it tells you the quest that you need to complete there. It's very helpful.
