Over the last few weeks we compiled your questions for Shane Kim, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Game Studios, and Kim was nice enough to turn them around in a timely manner. Thanks again to all our readers who played a part in this interview. We'll be announcing our next 10 Questions candidate shortly and we look forward to your continued participation.
Without further ado, please enjoy the Q&A:
1. How much do you actually play video games, and what are your current favorites (and not just for 360)?
Honestly speaking, my gameplay is limited to games from Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) for the most part, especially games targeted at more of a mass market. At home, my kids and I play a lot of Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Both of those games have created an enormous amount of fun for our family and friends.
2. I see some great games coming in '08 but nothing that I wasn't expecting over a year ago. Is there anything in the works that is only possible on a 360 and coming soon? It would be nice to have more exclusives *NOT TIMED* that justify my two 360 purchases.
We feel really great about the lineup of titles coming from MGS, which are of course exclusive to Xbox 360. Too Human is a title with which we've been really patient, and I believe that patience and commitment is going to pay off. For later this year and beyond, Xbox 360 customers can look forward to Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Banjo, Halo Wars, and Alan Wake. We also have a couple of other surprises that we'll be unveiling in the near future. Finally, Xbox 360 will be home to exclusive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV, so there really is a lot of amazing content on the way for our customers.
"...we feel very confident in the quality of the consoles that we are producing... Customers should be confident that we are applying the same focus and commitment to quality in our hardware as we are to our software and services."
3. Any ideas what I should do with my HD DVD add on besides stare at it with deep regret and a feeling of disgust?
While it is unfortunate that HD DVD was discontinued, there is still enjoyment to be had from your Xbox 360 HD DVD Player. You can take this as an opportunity to build out your movie collection! There are around 500 HD DVD movies to choose from and many at great deals, so there is a fair amount of content for HD DVD on the market. It also is a terrific DVD player and it allows you to have game discs and movie discs, whether HD DVD or DVD, within the console at one time. The HD DVD player also adds two additional USB ports to your console.
4. What steps are you taking to ensure that the next iteration of Xbox isn't rushed to market like the Xbox 360 was? Has Microsoft learned anything from the $1 billion write-off?
More 10 Questions!
World class quality is top priority for the entire Xbox 360 program. MGS has led all publishers in overall portfolio quality in each of the last three years. Xbox Live is the leading online gaming service with well over 10 million members. And we've also introduced a number of terrific, high-quality accessories for Xbox 360. We certainly regret the issues that some customers have experienced with Xbox 360, which is why we took the step of extending our warranty to an unprecedented three years. However, we feel very confident in the quality of the consoles that we are producing, and our hardware experience and talent continue to grow. Customers should be confident that we are applying the same focus and commitment to quality in our hardware as we are to our software and services.
5. In your spare time, which of the following activities would hold the greatest appeal for you? A) Shooting at a gun range; B)Swinging at a driving range; C) Driving at a race track; D)Getting dressed up in padded armor and wailing on some (shorter) dude with a padded broomstick. What does this say about you as a gamer and a leader?
That's an easy answer for me: B. I am an avid golfer, although I wish I had more time to pursue this hobby. I really enjoy golfing with my wife and my friends, which probably says something about me as a person and as a leader, too. I like competing with myself to score as well as possible, but I also enjoy being with and having fun with other people. Besides, I get to wail on people at work with a padded broomstick all the time. Just kidding...
